Olympia – Spanish-language television viewers in most areas of Washington can watch this
year’s political debates in Olympia and listen in their native tongue: TVW, the public affairs
cable television network that provides “gavel-to-gavel” coverage of the Washington State
Legislature, is televising all its LIVE 2007 legislative coverage in Spanish via Secondary Audio
Programming (SAP), a feature available on most modern televisions.
TVW President Cindy Zehnder said, “For Spanish speakers, this opens a whole new window to
the work of their legislators and their government. TVW’s mission has always been civics
education, and this service furthers that mission.”
SAP is an additional audio channel that can be received by all viewers with stereo television
sets in markets where SAP is available. TVW’s Spanish SAP is currently carried by Comcast
throughout Washington including the greater Puget Sound region, Spokane, and Vancouver; by
Charter Communications in Central Washington from Wenatchee through the Yakima Valley
and the Tri-Cities; and by some smaller cable carriers.
From July 2006 through June 2007 TVW is offering Spanish translation and closed captioning
of its LIVE legislative session coverage, election coverage, and produced programs. The new
services were made possible by a $319,000 appropriation from the 2006 legislature.

SAP Q&A:
What is SAP?
IIt can be used for any audio signal, but is most often used as a vehicle for a secondary language
for English-language programming.
How do I get the Spanish-language audio on my TV set?
IIf your TV set is a stereo TV set, you can select SAP by pressing the menu button on your TV or on
your remote control, selecting the audio function from the menu, and switching to SAP from mono
or stereo. If this does not work, consult your manual.
II can't find which button to press. Where should I look?
On many sets, the audio channel can be switched by remote control or through a SAP switch located
around the tuning panel or "on screen programming." Usually, there is a setting labeled SAP,
AUDIO SELECT, B-AUDIO, MTS, or MENU. By changing the setting, you should be able to select
SAP. Not all TV sets are alike, so you might want to check your instruction manual for all the
details.
